Welcome to BSES Limited

BSES Limited is the principal provider of research, development and extension to the Australian sugarcane industry. Formed in 1900, BSES has a long history of applying good science to problems facing sugarcane production, and developing effective solutions that benefit the whole industry. Today, we work closely with Australian sugarcane growers, millers, harvest contractors and government to find ways to make sugarcane production more profitable and environmentally sustainable.

Sugarcane is one of Australia's most important export crops worth about $2 billion to the Australian economy.

BSES QCANES and QCROPS program structure:

QCANES

bullet   Variety improvement;   Biosecurity;   Molecular breeding;   Experiment stations;   Variety adoption

QCROPS

bullet   Improved cropping systems;   Technology support;   Technology transfer and extension

Both QCANES and QCROPS have strong embedded extension (e) components that help industry realise the benefits of new varieties and better ways of farming. It is this integrated structure that makes our service so effective and valuable to the industry. The QCANES and QCROPS programs are supported by a strong corporate services team.

BSES conducts R,D&E in collaboration with others, particularly SRDC, DEEDI, CSIRO Plant Industry and DuPont. These partnerships provide significant leverage for the industry funds directly invested in BSES.

R,D&E is critical for a sustainable industry into the future. BSES aims to deliver realised value to growers, millers and other customers from targetted R,D&E.

Mark your 2012 calendar

BSES Limited will be hosting the 9th International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists (ISSCT) Agronomy and Agricultural Engineering workshop in Townsville on 9-14 September 2012.  The theme is “Sustainable Sugarcane Production”.

These workshops are held at various international locations every 3 years to allow more informal and in depth discussion between technologists than is possible at a major ISSCT Congress. A previous workshop held in Australia in 1997 featured irrigation as the main topic. A combination of agronomy and agricultural engineering topics for the forthcoming workshop reflects the interdependence of these skills in a sustainable production system.
